1943 – Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon of the Indian Air Force, who successfully defended the Srinagar Air Base against six Pakistani jets during the war in 1971, was born. He was posthumously awarded the Param Veer Chakra for this effort.

1947 – ‘Ramdas’, an Indian passenger ship overturned near Gull Island near Mumbai. 625 people lost their lives in this tragedy.

1992 – Considered to be the first star of Bengali Cinema, Kanan Devi passed away. She was given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1976 for her contribution to Indian cinema.

1997 – K.R. Narayanan won the presidential poll to become the tenth President Of India. With 95% votes in his favour he defeated his only opponent T.N. Seshan.
