This Day in History – May 1

1919 – One of the most renowned singers of the Indian Film Industry, Prabodh Chandra Dey, popularly known as Manna Dey, was born. He made his debut in playback singing with the movie, Tamanna (1943) and eventually gave the industry his huge contribution of over 3500 songs in several languages. He has been honoured with 3 National Awards, Padma Shri (1971), Lata Mangeshkar Award (1985), Padma Bhushan (2005), Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2007), Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (2011) and many others.

1944 – Indian politician, known for making headlines, with reference to the Commonwealth Games’ Scam, Suresh Kalmadi , was born.

1960 – Bombay State was partitioned to form two different states, Marathi-speaking “Maharashtra” and Gujrati-speaking “Gujrat”. Hence celebrated as Maharshtra Day and Gujrat Day.

1988 – Actress and Model, known for her work in ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi‘ and ‘Band Baaja Baaraat‘, Anushka Sharma was born. She made her acting debut in Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) opposite Bollywood Superstar Shahrukh Khan and bagged a Filmfare Best Actress Award. She also won a lot of critical appreciation for her another film Band Baaja Baaraat (2010). She in all has 3 Filmfare and a host of other bollywood awards to her name.
