1909 – A Giant in Kannada literature, poet and novelist Prof. Vinayak Krishna Gokak was born. He received the ‘Jnanpith Award’ in 1990 for his epic ‘Bharatha Sindhu Rashmi’ considered to be the longest written epic in any language in the 20th century. Prof.Gokak was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1961. He penned the novel ‘Samarasave Jeevana’ while his poetry collections include ‘Urnanaabha’, ‘Abyudaya’, ‘Baaladeguladalli’, ‘Dhyava Pruthvi’ and ‘Samudra Geethegal’.
1925 – Members of the Hindustan Republican Association raided the Number 8 Down Train that started from Shahjahanpur to reach Lucknow at Kakori. This incident is popular as the ‘Kakori Conspiracy’. Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Rajendra Lahiri, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sachindra Bakshi, Keshab Chakravarthy, Manmathnath Gupta, Murari Lal Gupta, Mukundi Lal Gupta and Banwari Lal executed the plan.
1942 – Mahatma Gandhi was arrested in Bombay (now Mumbai) by the British Government in India for launching the ‘Quit India’ Movement. The nationwide Civil disobedience movement was in support of Gandhiji’s demand for independence which the British refused. Thousands of protesters alongwith major leaders of the Indian National Congress were arrested and imprisoned without trial.On this day,when most of the leadership was behind bars,Aruna Asaf Ali took charge as she hoisted the flag and presided over the session held at Gowalia Tank Maidan.
