Watch: ‘Katiyabaaz (Powerless)’ Official Trailer

Loha Singh, a Kanpuria famed in his locality for being the Robinhood of electricity, is the local Katiyabaaz this documentary is based on. The documentary takes a comic take in underlying the issue of power-cuts in the city of Kanpur. With Loha we doctor the transformers and power cables to run small businesses and power several homes, much to UP Government’s annoyance.

Directed by director-duo Deepti Kakkar and Fahad Mustafa, Katiyabaaz could be for 2014 what Supermen of Malegaon was for 2012. And this comparison is only made for the subtle hilarity and insight shared in both. There have been quite a many powerful documentaries this year in Gulabi Gang and The World Before Her.

The movie has traveled prestigious film festivals around the world and has been the recipient of many awards.

It is the winner of the National Award for the Best Investigative film at the 61st National Awards, and the winner of India Gold for best film at the Mumbai Film Festival, 2013.
It also received a grant from the prestigious Sundance institute.
