This Day in History – April 30

1910 – Renowned Telugu poet and lyricist, Srirangam Srinivasarao, better known as Sri Sri, was born. Having the credit of penning more than 1000 songs in Telugu films, he has won several awards for the same. In 1972, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award while in 1975, he won the National Film Award for Best Lyrics. He also won the Soviet Land Nehru Award of India.

Srirangam Srinivasarao

1926 – Marathi music’s one of the most respected composer and music director, Pandit Shrinivas Vinayak Khale, known to his followers and loved ones as ‘Khale Kaka’, was born. Starting his career as a music director for All India Radio (AIR), he went on to record over 140 poems, and composed many songs in around five languages. In a career spanning over six decades, he has innumerous awards and honours to his name like: Lata Mangeshkar Award (1993), Dadasaheb Phalke Trust Award (2003), Sangeet Ratna Puraskar (2007) and Padma Bhushan (2010) just to name a few.

Shrinivas Khale

1987 – Right-handed middle-order batsman, Rohit Sharma was born. Regarded as one of the most successful players in Indian Premier League (IPL), he made his debut in international cricket at the age of 20. Though struggling for a secure middle order position, after taken over by Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli, he maintains the position in First-class cricket representing Mumbai, where he scored a triple century in the Ranji Trophy in 2009. He currently plays for Mumbai Indians in IPL. He also has one century in the IPL and a hatrick to his credit.

Rohit Sharma

2009 – The Sixth Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Dorjee Khandu, died in a helicopter crash near Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh.
