1861 – Babu Devakinandan Khatri was born. He penned ‘Chandrakanta’ considered to be the first ever prose work in the modern Hindi language.

1893 – Padma Vibhushan awardee, Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, who founded the Indian Statistical Institute, statistician and scientist  was born. He gave the Mahanalobis distance, a measure in statistics that gauges the similarity of an unknown sample set to a known one.
1997 – World Chess Champion Vishwanathan Anand won the Classic Rapid tournament at Frankfurt.
