1990 – INSAT-1D (Indian National Satellite) was launched.

1997 – The First Indian to swim across the English channel, Mihir Sen, passed away. Sen was bestowed with the Padma Shri in 1959 and Padma Bhushan in 1967.
2000 – Popular Marathi Litterateur Purushottam Laxman Deshpande passed away. He received the Padma Shri in 1966 and the Padma Bhushan in 1990.
