In an attempt to simplify online rail ticketing, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched its official Android App called IRCTC Connect, just over a month after launching an app for BlackBerry 10 users. The newly launched IRCTC Connect is available on Google Play, and has already had over 10k installs. The app is 12MB in size, and is compatible with devices running Android 4.1 and higher. IRCTC Connect app promises the following features-
• One step login to existing users
• Search and Book train tickets
• View and Cancel tickets
• Retains recently added passenger details
• New Users, register from App directly
• Upcoming Journey Alerts
At present, the app doesn’t synchronize with the website, and though it retains the passenger details you enter via the app, it fails to update all earlier information which you have entered on the desktop site. The major issue with the app is that a user cannot access it between 8am to 12pm, and during this period passengers can book tickets only through IRCTC website or through the many physical booking counters. So far the app has received a 4+ rating on the Store from over 800 users, and many users have mentioned the shortcomings in the app. Another complaint was that there’s just no option to change user password and to check the PNR status. Hopefully the developers shall fix these shortcoming in their upcoming upgrade. The clean, simple interface is definitely a plus.
