Bharat Ratna awardee and eminent scientist CNR Rao is the first Indian candidate to be elected as an honorary foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS). Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research, founded and chaired by Rao, said- “Prof Rao is the first Indian Scientist to be elected to this prestigious academy, which consists of several Nobel laureates and eminent scientists of the world.” Earlier in January 2012, the Chinese Academy of Science bestowed upon Rao the award for international scientific cooperation. He was also elected by CAS at its General Assembly held 4th November as a honorary member.
It is being stated now that Rao has been elected in nearly all scientific academies of the world- including The Royal Society, London, National Academy of Science, USA, Pontifical Academy of Science, Japan Academy and Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences, among others. Also, he’s been conferred upon with 60 Honoris Causa (Honorary Doctorates) by several universities across the world. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna- the highest Indian Civilian honor- last week.
