Life Of Pi has been honored with two National Tourism Awards by the Tourism Ministry for promoting India as a tourist spot, mainly Munnar (Kerala) and Puducherry. Union Tourism Minister Chiranjeevi announced that these awards shall be bestowed upon the film director Ang Lee, and also upon Yann Martel, author of the book on which the movie is based. He believes that this film’s success shall attract more international/national filmmakers to shoot their films in India.
The Ministry of Tourism recognizes ”Film Tourism” as a niche tourism outcome, and annually awards several stakeholders, filmmakers and writers who’ve contributed in India tourism promotion. It has even requested the state governments and union territory administrations to promote filming in their respective domains.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Tourism inked an MoU with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to publicize ‘Incredible India’ campaign through the medium of cinema at various international film festivals. And Ministry of Tourism in return shall provide for the budgetary support for these film festivals, and other similar events.
