It was this day in 1893, when Mahatma Gandhi was thrown out of the train at Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, for refusing to abide by the rules that separated humans on the basis of race.
In 1974, Mahesh Bhupathi, Tennis star, was born. Also, this very day in 1997, Mahesh Bhupathi became the first Indian to win a Grand Slam title when he and Japan’s Rika Hiraki claimed the French Open in mixed doubles. Even today he’s in contention to win the same title in the same form of the game!
