This Day In History- December 27

1911 – Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s composition ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was sung on the second day of the 28th Annual Session of the Indian National Congress at Kolkata (then Calcutta).

1948 – The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI) was founded. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was its first Chief Patron.

Salman Khan

1965 – Popular actor Salman Khan was born. Born Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan, he made his debut with ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’ (1988) and was seen in a supporting role before he went on to deliver a success in the form of ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (1989). He has starred in over eighty films including hits like ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ (1994), ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ (1994), ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ (1999), ‘Tere Naam’ (2003), ‘Wanted’ (2009), ‘Dabangg’ (2010) and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012).

Kaala Patthar

1975 – One of the worst mining disasters occurred at a coal mine in Chasnala, Jharkhand in which 372 miners lost their lives after the mine caved in due to an explosion which let in 32,000 Cu.m of water every minute into the mine.

2002 – Celebrated Assamese folk singer Pratima Barua Pandey passed away. She is credited with the popularisation of ‘lokageet’ or folk songs in the ‘Goalpariya’ dialect. Some of her popular songs were ‘Aaji Danrao Kala’, ‘Bail Machhe Kheil Kare’, ‘Ek Baar Hori Bolo Rasona’, ‘Hastir Kanya’ etc. She received many honours including the ‘Padma Shri’ and ‘Sangeet Natak Akademi Award’ in appreciation of her efforts to popularise Goalpriya lokageet.
