1945 – Great Activist and Educator Sanjit ‘Bunker’ Roy was born.He is the founder of the ‘Barefoot College’ an NGO located in Tilonia,Rajasthan that is actively involved in activities of rural development with an objective of making rural India self-sufficient and sustainable. The College provides training to rural men and women who have no hope of getting even the lowest government job to become solar engineers,doctors,accountants,architects,computer instructors,artisans and other similar professionals.He featured in TIME magazine’s list of 100 most influential personalities in the world. Bunker Roy was three time natonal champion in squash and also represented India on the internatonal stage before he  decided to dedicate his life to social service.The college was founded in 1972 and registered as ‘Social Work and Research Centre’ and has successfully trained over 3 million people. In 2002, he received the Schwabb Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship.

1980 – Renowned Scupltor and Painter Ramkinkar Baij passed away.He was a student of fine arts at Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Shantiniketan’.The Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Bhushan in 1970.

1987 – World Champion Vishwanathan Anand became the first asian to win the World Junior Chess Championship in Baguio,Philipines.
