1942 – The ‘Secret Congress Radio’ went on air with Dr.Ushabehn Mehta making the following announcement: “This is the Congress Radio calling on (a wavelength of) 42.34 meters from somewhere in India.” The main objective of the Radio station was to sustain the ‘Quit India’ movement that had become leaderless after the British government had put major leaders behind bars and to keep the masses informed about the freedom struggle.

1947 – Pakistan was partitioned from India as it came into existence as an independent nation.

Pravin Amre

1968 – Former Indian Test Cricketer Pravin Amre was born.Amre is one of the few cricketers who scored a test match hundred and an ODI fifty on debut and the only Indian to do so. Though Amre represented India for just two seasons he managed to impress Sir Dennis Lillee, former Australian fast bowling great who thought that Amre played fast bowling better than Sir Vivian Richards, the West Indian batting legend; while according to spin wizard Bishen Singh Bedi he was a better player of spin bowling as compared to Gundappa Vishwanath. He is currently the coach of the Mumbai Cricket team and the assistant coach of Pune Warriors India.

Shammi Kapoor

2011 – Legendary film actor and director Shammi Kapoor passed away. He is often described as the most entertaining and stylish actor.Shammi Kapoor is remembered for his performances in ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ (1957),’Dil Deke Dekho’ (1958), ‘Ujala'(1958), ‘Basant’ (1960), ‘Junglee’ (1961), ‘Dil Tera Deewana’ (1962), ‘Professor’ (1962), ‘China Town’ (1962), ‘Bluffmaster'(1963), ‘Rajkumar’ (1964), ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ (1964), ‘Janwar’ (1965), ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966), ‘An Evening in Paris'(1967), ‘Bramhachari'(1968), ‘Andaz'(1971) and ‘Vidhaata'(1982). His performances in ‘Brahmachari'(1968) and ‘Vidhaata'(1982) won him the Fimfare Award for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively. He was last seen Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Rockstar'(2011). He was also honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995 and the Phalke Legend Actor Award by the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy in 2009.

Vilasrao deshmukh

2012- Union Minister and two times former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh passed away.
