This Day In History- August 1

1920 – Political leader and Social reformer Bal Gangadhar Tilak passed away. He was referred to as ‘Lokmanya’ which means accepted by people.

Meena Kumari

 

1932 – Tragedy queen Mahjabeen Bano popularly known by her screen name ‘Meena Kumari’ was born. She was appreciated for her roles in movies like ‘Parineeta'(1953), ‘Baiju Bawra'(1954), ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam'(1963), ‘Kaajal'(1966) which also fetched her Filmfare awards for Best Actress.

1974 – The District of Nicobar was created. Separated off from the Andaman district, it is the fifth least populous district in the country. It’s headquarters is located on the Car Nicobar Island.
