This Day In History- October 17

1817 – Syed Ahmad Khan, popularly known as Sir Syed was born. He was a Indian politician, an educator, also an islamic reformist. He brought a reform in the field of education for the Muslim community in India by founding the Muhammedan Anglo-Oriental College, which later developed into the Aligarh Muslim University. This gave rise to a new generation of Muslim entrepreneurs and politicians who composed the Aligarh movement to secure the political future of Muslims of India.

1920 – The communist party was formed. The party was was founded in Tashkent, Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, soon after the Second Congress of the Communist International. The founding members of the party were M.N. Roy, Evelyn Trent Roy (Roy’s wife), Abani Mukherji, Rosa Fitingof (Abani’s wife), Mohammad Ali (Ahmed Hasan), Mohammad Shafiq Siddiqui, Rafiq Ahmed of Bhopal and M.P.B.T. Acharya.

1947 – Indian actress, Simi Grewal was born. Along with acting she tried her hands as a producer, director and a Tv show hostess as well. She is  known for her work in the films Do Badan, Saathi, Mera Naam Joker, Siddhartha and Karz.

smita patil

1955 – Indian film actress, Smita Patil was born. Along with the Indian films, Smita patil acted in television and theater as well. She appeared in over 75 Hindi and Marathi films in a career that spanned over a decade.During her career, she received two National Film Awards and a Filmfare Award, also, she was the recipient of the Padma Shri, in 1985. Smita Patil died at the age of 31 from childbirth complications barely two weeks after having given birth to her son, Prateik Babbar.

1970 – Former Indian cricketer, Anil Kumble was born. Anil Kumble is a right-arm leg spin bowler and a right-hand batsman.As of 2012, he is the leading wicket taker for India in both Test cricket, as well as in One Day Internationals. With more than 600 Test wickets, he is the third highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, and the third bowler to achieve this record and the first bowler from India to do so. Kumble made his test debut on August 9th 1990, and ODI debut on April 25th 1990. Kumble played his last match on October 29th 2008 and is presently serving as Chairman of ICC Cricket Committee.
