Karbonn and Lava, two of India’s leading domestic handset manufacturers, shall be launching their Windows-based budget smartphones in the forthcoming months. While Karbonn phones shall be priced in the range of Rs 6000-Rs 12000, the Lava phone price shall commence from Rs 6500. Karbonn Managing Director Pradeep Jain has announced that the company shall be introducing four Windows OS-based phones by May-end, while Lava International CEO and MD Hari Om Rai has announced the onset of their company phones by July. The phones would be equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processors. For XOLO phones, the launch timeline is anticipated in the coming quarter. A XOLO spokesperson stated that with Windows platform, they’ll be able to capture a desired 15 percent smartphone market share by end-2014.
Last month, during Mobile World Congress (MWC2014), Microsoft had declared that it shall be partnering nine new Windows adapters – Gionee, JSR, Karbonn, Lava (Xolo), Foxconn, Lenovo, LG, Longcheer and ZTE. Samsung, HTC, Nokia and Huawei are already producing Windows handsets.
As per IDC figures of Q-4 2013, Android enjoyed 78.1 percent of global smartphone shipment share, while Microsoft Windows crawled at 3 percent.
