This Day In History- August 13

1795- Srimati Ahilyabai Holkar, the Holkar Maharani of the Malwa Kingdom, passed away. She is recognized as Punyashloka, since her social work is believed to be ever-ideal. Ahilyabai’s husband was killed in the battle of Kumbher(1794), and 12 years later, after the  death of her father-in law, she herself led armies in the battleground. She is also known for building a lot many temples in Maheshwar and Indore.

 Vyjayanthimala Bali

1936- Vyjayanthimala Bali, the Indian movie actress, Bharatnatyam dancer, Carnatic singer, choreographer and a Parliamentarian, was born. With her Bollywood debut at the age of thirteen, her film-career spanned almost two decades, after which she entered into Bharatnatyam. In 1982, was conferred upon with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest Indian honor for practicing artists. She even served as a chairperson for the of 48th National Film Awards.

Sridevi

1963- ‘The First Female Superstar of the Indian Cinema’ and the ever-bubbling bundle of energy Sridevi was born. She forayed into the world of cinema at the age of four, and left films in 1997 only to attend to her children. She has four Filmfare awards to her name- four for Hindi films and one each for Tamil and  Telugu films. Her Bollywood stint will start afresh with ‘English Vinglish’ coming up in 2012.
