Indian telecom major Idea Cellular today launched its ‘Movie Store’, a mobile entertainment service in Kerala. The service will enable Idea users to download movies from over a database of 1000 movies songs, and video clips. At present only Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada movies can be downloaded and very soon movies in Gujarati, Rajasthani languages will be made available. ‘It will be the first of its kind service in India offering 1000 full length movies’, said Mr. Ambrish Jain, Deputy Managing Director, Idea Cellular Ltd., who was also present at the launch.
Idea Cellular is also working on plans to launch 4G service in Kerala, and the plan will be executed once the company is up with the ecosystem. Idea cellular would be among the first companies to launch 4G service in the state. The operator had acquired 10 Mhz of contiguous 1800 spectrum to ensure the best 4G experience, leading to unmatched download speeds.
Idea Cellular enjoyed revenue of over Rs. 1000 in the second quarter of current fiscal and have around 143 million subscribers using internet service on their mobile phones. As per Mr. Sashi Shankar, Chief Marketing Officer, Idea Cellular, ‘the company has covered 97 per cent of Kerala population with 10,000 sites for 2G and 3G. Idea cellular has emerged as No 1 operator with a subscriber base of over 9.3 million’, ‘Today, one out of three Keralites is an Idea subscriber and the network covers 97 per cent of the population’ he added.
The company is focusing on mobile entertainment and have signed contracts with the other companies to provide service and content for the customers. The new offering will be made available in two options; either the customer can pay a charge of Rs. 50 per movie, or can buy a monthly subscription of Rs. 100 for four movies.
