WhatsApp intensifies its presence in India joining hands with Reliance Communications, where it offers college-going students a free unlimited alternative to the popular BBM service. Reliance’s My College Plan, a pre-paid plan only available for GSM, lets students derive the most of WhatsApp’s instant messaging service and Facebook for a mere INR 16/month. Though calls and SMSes are excluded, with a majority of phones now supporting WhatsApp, the latter is unlikely to worry up the students. Though it’s the same as Blackberry Messenger service, WhatsApp wins hands down for being available on almost every platform- Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, even BlackBerry itself, plus a few select Nokia devices.
This is believed to be WhatsApp’s first ever Indian deal, and with mobile development in a phase of development, WhatsApp has quite many potential competitors in HookUp, WeChat, Imsy, KakaoTalk, Line, and the ever-rising Nimbuzz. Whether this deal blooms up big, or the desi developed apps get their due, is all that remains to be seen.
