Oliver Stone has always liked making films about controversial figures in modern American history, such as JFK (1991), Nixon (1995) and W. (2008). The director now adds another to the list with Snowden. The film will tell the story of the notorious whistleblower who created a sensation in 2013 by revealing sensitive information about pervasive surveillance carried out by the US government.
Watch the first trailer for the film here, featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden:
By the looks of the trailer, the film will have its task cut out for it. The superb Citizenfouralready did a stellar job telling the Snowden story, and it’s hard to see what Snowden can bring to the table that wasn’t already accomplished by the Oscar-winning 2014 documentary.
Snowden also has a supporting cast that includes Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, and Nicolas Cage. Initially scheduled for a December 2015 release, the film was pushed out to May 2016 due to production delays. It will now hit theaters in September, a decision that has presumably been made with an eye on Oscar season.
