Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D was among the first strong films to have linked Punjab with drugs. The same set of producers have returned with Udta Punjab, a film that aims to analyse the involvement of the state’s youth in substance abuse. The protagonist here is a rockstar Tommy Singh (Shahid Kapoor) who’s a user, and who apparently teams up with a migrant worker (Alia Bhatt) to satiate his needs. This is apparently Alia’s most de-glam role till date. Another major pull factor for the film is that Shahid and Kareena have united on-screen after 9 long years, and this is a pairing that many would love to watch. Though they may have very little interaction with each other in the film, the promise of them sharing a few frames is high. Joining the cast is popular Punjabi actor Diljit Dosanjh, who plays a police inspector fighting drug abuse.
The subject is pretty bold, and though there are a few cuss words in the trailer, I’m pretty sure I’d be expecting a few beeps or rather a dulled out version of those heartfelt fouls in the main film, following necessary edits by our beloved CFBC.
Produced by Phantom and Balaji Telefilms and directed by Abhishek Chaubey, Udta Punjab is all set for a theatrical release on 17th June. Watch the trailer here-
