This Day In History- August 5

1950 – Great freedom fighter and First Chief Minister of Assam,’Lokpriya’ Gopinath Bordoloi passed away. He was one of the prominent figures engaged in the struggle for Independence. He was awarded the ‘Bharat Ratna’ posthumously in 1999.

Venkatesh Prasad

1969 – Former India Speedster Venkatesh Prasad was born. A Right arm medium fast bowler,Prasad spearheaded the Indian pace attack with Javagal Srinath. Prasad was one India’s finest bowlers and some of his memorable performances include his 5 for 27 against Pakistan in the Super Six Stage of the 1999 Cricket World Cup at Old Trafford, Manchester, England and a 6 for 33 in a Test match against the same opposition at Chennai in 1999 including a stupendous spell of 5 wickets for 0 runs. However, his reply to Pakistan’s Aamir Sohail is one of the most memorable moments of his career. This was during the 1996 Cricket World Cup when after being hit by a boundary Prasad was sledged by Sohail as he pointed his bat towards Prasad and then in the direction where he hit the ball. On the very next delivery, Venkatesh Prasad clean bowled Sohail which is considered to have triggered a batting collapse as Pakistan lost the game and was eliminated from the tournament. Prasad was adjudged ‘Ceat International Cricketer of the Year’in 1996 and was also awarded the Arjuna Award in 2000. He was appointed as the bowling coach of the national team from 2007 to 2009.

Kajol

1974 – Popular film actress Kajol was born. She made her debut with ‘Bekhudi’ (1992) while still in school and tasted success first with ‘Baazigar'(1993). She was appreciated for her performances in movies like ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ (1995), ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hain’ (1998), ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ (2001) that went on to become blockbusters. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress six times and holds the record for the same along with Late actress Nutan who incidentally is her aunt. The Government of India conferred upon her the Padma Shri in 2011. She is the daughter of actress Tanuja and director Shomu Mukherjee and is married to action star Ajay Devgn.

2000 – Former India Test Cricketer Lala Amarnath passed away. Lala Amarnath is regarded as one of the finest batsmen to have played the game.He was the first Indian to score a Test century and also the first Indian to score a century on debut. Lala Amarnath was also the first Test captain of Independent India and it was under his leadership that the India won her first-ever test against Pakistan. His sons Mohinder and Surinder also represented India in cricket with Mohinder having played a crucial role in India’s 1983 Cricket World Cup victory.
