Now apply for passports and visas straight from your smartphone. The Ministry of External Affairs has floated ‘MEAIndia’, a smartphone application that helps you apply for visas, passports and seek help from the nearest consulate while on the move. The application runs on Android and iOS platforms and can be downloaded for free. ‘A One-Stop shop’ is what foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai felt about the app as he launched it on Monday.
“Whether it be information on passport status applied anywhere in India or location of centres which attest documents in India, or pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Haj, this one stop-shop will provide you all you need to know,” said the foreign secretary.
MEAIndia also has a segment devoted to ‘Haj’ and ‘Kailash Mansarovar Yatra’. This section of the app provides assistance and information sought by pilgrims travelling for ‘Haj’ for passport application, visas, status of application, legalization of documents etc. It will also update them with details such as flight status, accommodation and news from Saudi Arabia. Pilgrims who intend to undertake the ‘Kailash Manasarovar Yatra’ can track their selection status with the help of this app.
“The requirements of communications have changed and so have we brought changes in the Ministry of External Affairs. We have adapted to the new demands of technology and means of communications,” said Mathai.
The App also keeps ticking with the latest developments in foreign relations with regards to agreements, official statements and events of significance and allows citizens to ask voice opinions or questions about India’s foreign policy directed to the foreign minister.
MEAIndia was conceptualized and created by engineers at the National Informatics Centre and Silver Touch Technologies and MEA under-secretary E Vishnu Vardhan Reddy. Another feature of the app is the quiz based on our country’s foreign relations. Introduced with an intention to raise awareness about India’s external affairs, users can not only take the quiz but also contribute to the questionnaire.
