India’s largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki is considering the development of the country’s first small hybrid car that offers both electric and petrol options. The intended car shall be co-developed with Suzuki engineers from japan, it was reported. Confirming this development, two senior company officials stated that the project is still at an infancy stage and hence they won’t be sketching a timeline around it. However, the company is pretty serious regarding this project of launching such a vehicle in the Indian market, they added.
Witnessing a company like Maruti shifting gear towards electric is quite a welcome change, and now the bigger task that lies ahead of them is to bring out this hybrid technology at a affordable price- the lower the cost the better. Toyota Prius based on a similar technology does exist for over INR 10 lacs, so Maruti introducing an inexpensive model shall totally change the game.
