The International Olympics Committee (IOC) suspended Indian Olympic Association (IOA) today owing to government interference in the election procedures, stated the officials possessing knowledge of the decision. When months of warnings were not conformed to by the IOA and independent elections weren’t held as demanded, the IOC executive had to impose the sanction on India. Official announcement is yet to be made.
Suspension implies that the Indian branch won’t get further IOC funding and the officials shall be banned from participating in Olympic meetings and events. Also, Indian athletes shall be prohibited from taking part in Olympic events under their national flag. International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams kept mum on the issue. Also, acting IOA president Vijay Kumar Malhotra stated that the association hasn’t been detailed about any suspension as yet.
