Rani Mukerji plays Shivani Shivaji Roy, a badass police officer with the Mumbai Crime Branch fighting against sex-trafficking. Now while the concept is quite appealing, the “every war is personal” tagline taken literally may kill the plot (I’d laud YRF if it pulls off a Zero Dark Thirty, but chances of that are pretty slim). Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, Mardaani is yet another addition in the female-centric films released this year, most of them which garnered critical and commercial acclaim (Queen, Dedh Ishqiya, Gulabi Gang, etc). It’d be great to see Mardaani standing alongside these names, and not crumble down like Revolver Rani.
Produced by Yash Raj Films, Mardaani is scheduled for an August 22 theatrical release.
