The major categories in the 61st National Film awards were all raked in by indie films. While Anand Gandhi’s Ship of Theseus was christened the Best Feature Film, Shahid won Hansal Mehta the title of Best Director, and Rajkummar Rao a shared title of Best Actor (shared with Suraj Venjaramoodu for Malayalam-film Perariyathavar). Miss Lovely received the award for the Best Production Design, which went to Ashim Ahluwalia, Tabsheer Zutshi and Parichit Paralkar. It even won the Special Jury award.
Liar’s Dice won awards for Best Actress and Best Cinematography for Geetanjali Thapa and Rajeev Ravi respectively. Marathi movie Fandry won an award for the Best Debut Film by a Director. The Best Child Actor award is shared by Somnath Avghade (Fandry) and Sadhana (Thanga Meengal). Best Children’s Film went to Kaphal by Batul Mukhtiyar. Best Film on Social Issues and Best Editing awards were claimed by Gulabi Gang.
In non-feature category, Shubhashish Bhutiani’s Kush won an award for Best Promotional film, and Kamal Swaroop’s Rangbhoomi won the Best Film. Best Film on Social Issues and Best Editing awards were claimed by Nishtha Jain’s Gulabi Gang.
